25th Anniversary Dinner!!!

Dear NUS Psychology alumni and undergraduates,

Greetings to all of you! This academic year (AY 2011/2012) marks 25 years of psychology education at the National University of Singapore (NUS). As such, the Department of Psychology is celebrating this special occasion with a 25th Anniversary Dinner. You are cordially invited to join us for thisDinner!

The NUS Psychology Program was firstly introduced in the Department of Social Work and Psychology in the 1986/1987 academic year. Since then, the program has expanded rapidly and is always popular among students. In 2005, the Department of Psychology became an independent department. Currently, the Department has 35 full-time PhD staff, 10 part-time PhD staff, and 5 teaching assistants. In addition, there are approximately 200 new majors each year, which represents roughly one-sixth of the undergraduate enrollment in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Thus, let us take this opportunity to commemorate our 25 years of progress and achievements.

We sincerely invite you all to attend our 25th Anniversary Dinner. Besides celebrating 25 years of the existence of the Psychology Program at NUS, the dinner also aims at building networking opportunities for our alumni and Psychology undergraduates. Our alumni can also get together and mingle with old friends, while our Psychology undergraduates can link up with pastseniors who can share with them their career and other experiences.

The details of our 25th Anniversary Dinner are as follows:

Date: 29 March 2012 (Thursday)

Time: 1830 – 2200

Venue: NUSS Kent Ridge Guild House, 9 Kent Ridge Drive

Dinner style: International buffet

Cost:   Alumni: $36/pax *

Undergraduates: $18/pax *

(*These are maximum costs and are subject to adjustments depending on the number of attendees)

We are currently conducting a survey to gather responses to aid us in our planning of the Anniversary Dinner. We will really appreciate it if you could spend some time to do this SURVEY before 18 January 2012.

Please also help us to tell your friends about our 25th Anniversary Dinner and ask them to do the survey!

You may contact us (Dr. So Wing Chee psyswc@nus.edu.sg; Miss Annabel Koh president@nuspsyche.org) if you have any queries.

Yours sincerely

Department of Psychology

Suicide Awareness Campaign "One Last Breath" by CHAT

Since World Mental Health Day falls in the month of October, the Community Health Assessment Team (CHAT) from IMH is holding a suicide awareness campaign titled “One Last Breath” from 21st Oct to early Dec 2011.

The campaign sets out to raise awareness amongst youths over the imperative to communicate when feeling suicidal or having suicidal thoughts, as it is believed that suicide can be prevented with open communication and the lifting of stigmatisation to mental health issues.

All of you are invited to participate in the T-shirt Design Contest which is part of the campaign. The T-shirt designs should carry a message of hope and encouragement, of which could remind those who may have suicidal thoughts or behaviors to reconsider their actions. You stand to win prizes such as the Macbook Pro, Wacom tablet, iPad 2, and even H&M vouchers. An exhibition will also be held to display the Top 20 entries where the designs will be printed on shirts.

Alternatively, you could also participate in their Online Message Contest titled “What would you say to them?” in which you pen some words of encouragement to messages which arose from their focus groups. The best comment made would stand to win H&M vouchers.

Please show your support for the campaign! :D

For more information about the campaign, do visit their website.
